bullet "You shall not misuse the name of the L-rd your God, for the L-rd will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

I prefer the translation that says "Thou shalt not take the name of the L-rd your God in vain".

Let's look at both of these and listen to the Spirit of God to make sure we hear what the truth is. First we hear men and women use God's name as a curse word.  This is sad and silly at the same time.  How can the Blesser ever become the Curser?  Only if He is made to curse wicked men.  The curse causeless can not come, so without a reason for a curse it can't affect us.  This is also very sad because these people don't know the far reaching love of God or they would never use His name in such a manner.  We're held accountable for every idle and non-productive word we speak, so will we be held accountable for words that destroy.

In the King James version we're taught not to take the name of the Lord in vain.  This is so neat.  If you look at it like a marriage covenant you can see that taking a husband's name in vain would be to take his name, but not act married.  We should love, honor, cherish and serve our God similarly to the way a married woman would respect her husband!

Another way to look at it would be in an adoption.   An adopted child (which is what we are) takes his new father's name.  He wears it proudly.  He tells everyone "this is my dad".  We can do the same.  We can wear the name of God proudly, we can honor it, we can honor Him.  We can share His beneficence with all who are in ear shod of our proclamations!  Let us not take His name in vain!

Last but not least I see children who call their parents by their first names in an unholy way. It is just ugly in my personal estimation. I would no more call my dad Harold than I would call the President Prez. We live in a dark world with very little respect. God enjoys intimacy with His children and expects sons and daughters to be sons and daughters and not friends or pals. Yes, Abraham was a friend to God, but he revered the Almighty in such a way that God called him friend not visa versa. We should not be pals with our parents, but demonstrate a picture of son and daughter with God as our Father.
